Since time immemorial, Indigenous nations and peoples, each with their own unique histories and traditions, have faithfully stewarded the land and waters we know as Canada. More Than A Roof Mennonite Housing Society serves the people of British Columbia by developing and operating housing on unceded, traditional and ancestral territories across the province, and specifically the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations in Vancouver, the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples in Victoria, the Katzie First Nation in Maple Ridge, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations in North Vancouver, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nation in Steveston, the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh in Prince George, and the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples of the Coast Salish Nation in Burnaby. We humbly express our gratitude for the faithful, ongoing care and stewardship of these lands and acknowledge the privilege to live and work on them.
As a Christian organization we believe God has gifted us the earth to live, work and serve together. We want to ensure both the land and the people who dwell in it are treated with care and respect. Addressing reconciliation is important to More Than A Roof and we are committed to responding to the impact of colonialism throughout our organization. We recognize our responsibility to provide culturally safe and welcoming spaces of care for everyone within our communities, and to understand our collective history as we stand for truth and justice. We seek a new relationship with the First Nations People of these lands, one based in honour and deep respect.
