Community Connection

Saturday, Jan 15th 2011

2011 is well under way. While the jury is still out on the benefits of resolutions, each new year is certainly a great time for reflection. At More Than A Roof Housing, we are now in our 25th year of service. Twenty five years of making a difference, of successful partnerships, of affordable housing solutions.

As we reflect on the milestones, we also look forward. This is the year our society will see Karis Place open. This 105 unit building for singles in downtown Vancouver is the 10th community in the MTR Housing portfolio. The building will be home to low-income urban singles including those taking the bold step in addiction recovery.

With growth comes the addition of new staff members to our team. And so we begin a new year of making room; for those needing housing, for those needing support, and for new staff. We look forward with anticipation to all this year will bring.

Planning Our 25th Anniversary Celebration

In 1984, a small group of business professionals decided they wanted to make a difference to help with the housing crisis. Together they were able to come up with some creative and viable solutions. Working in partnership with the city of Vancouver, More Than A Roof Housing (then MCC Housing) started planning the first of many affordable housing communities in B.C.

Fast forward to 2011. No one could have anticipated 10 communities and over 1000 tenants, but here we are. Our ‘success’ is not measurable by annual budget lines or the size of our portfolio, but rather the changed lives of those living in each community. And not just our tenants. Each affordable housing society in the province contributes to the health and well being of our neighborhoods. We work together to provide solutions. We work toward a common goal of seeing every individual and family enjoy affordable housing. And when that’s happening, we can agree there's success to celebrate.

On June 12th our society will host a 25th Anniversary Celebration. That’s quite the milestone. We realize the journey has been aided by funding partners, dedicated volunteers, committed staff and an unshakable faith that says, “nothing is impossible!”

This won’t be our last anniversary! We move forward with a strong belief in the value of what we do. If our message resonates with you, we invite you to contact our Executive Director, Lorne Epp for more information about our society and ways you can contribute to the mission.

Volunteering Spotlight

Every year Columbia Bible College sends volunteers into Vancouver to serve in various missions and ministries. They come ready and willing to be sleep deprived, get their hands dirty, and have their hearts touched by the amazing stories found on every street corner of our city.

Their website says 'Urban Plunge is a four day urban mission adventure into the heart of the city of Vancouver, designed to expose students to the joys and challenges of urban ministry. Growing a heart for the city is their focus.' Thanks to these, and other faithful volunteers, we are able to positively impact the lives of our tenants.
