Community Connection

The essence of community is to bring people together. As our organization grows, so does the need to communicate a strong, clear message to an ever increasing online audience. Our updated website shares our 'community building focus' and points tenants and those interested in the work of our society to a common resource that provides tools for support and relevant information about our role in alleviating poverty and homelessness in British Columbia.

Karis Place - A Green Community

Karis Place is the latest community developed and managed by More Than A Roof Housing Society. Soon to be located at 1338 Seymour Street in downtown Vancouver, this 105 unit building will help in the efforts to provide quality affordable housing and prevent homelessness in the city. The first of the Vancouver 12 Sites to be completed, this community meets the LEED Gold standard for construction and environmental design.

To achieve this rating a number of environmental factors had to be considered including innovative design initiatives. Everything from site selection and construction site waste management to water efficient landscaping and the use of low emitting materials on the inside of the building, all have contributed to this admirable rating for environmental design. Not only is this good for the environment, it creates a much healthier setting for the health and enjoyment of our tenants.

Go Green & Go Home

Conscientious businesses and consumers are looking for eco-options to help save money and reduce energy consumption. In partnership with BC Hydro, tenants of More Than A Roof Housing are being offered, at no cost to them, Energy Savings Kits. These kits are filled with products designed to assist in reducing energy consumption and the cost of utility bills while increasing the comfort and safety of our tenants' homes. BC Hydro's bulk distribution program will see our communities retrofitted by the spring of 2011.

Each kit contains the following items:

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs - they use up to 75% less energy than regular bulbs and can last up to 10 years

Weather Stripping - to install around windows and doors to help keep out drafts

Window Insulator Film - this clear, see through film acts as another window to keep heat in

Electrical Outlet & Switch Sealers - prevents cold air from getting through outlets & switches

Fridge & Freezer Thermometers - to help set fridges and freezers at ideal temperatures while conserving energy

Low Flow Showerhead - uses significantly less water than a regular showerhead

Tap Aerators - pumps air into the water flowing from taps allowing a 50% drop in amount of water needed

Long Lasting Night Light - energy saving item

Next Step Success

An area More Than A Roof Housing is concerned about is poverty and ways to alleviate it.  Each year, a select number of tenants within our communities are able to join in financial education workshops where they gain valuable knowledge to help them manage their spending and save toward a life goal - everything from purchasing a computer to visiting family across the country.  After one year, More Than A Roof Housing then matches, dollar for dollar, the savings of each tenant up to a maximum amount annually.   Each participant walks away with better financial management skills and a nice amount of savings.

This year saw approximately one dozen individuals graduate from the Next Step Program. Thanks to the support of Vancity and donations from our supporters, More Than A Roof Housing was able to generously match the savings initiatives of each tenant!
