2002 Vancouver

Candela Place

When More Than A Roof was approached to develop a housing community for singles in the downtown core, we knew we wanted to be involved.  Funded by all three levels of government, Candela Place opened its doors in 2002 to support some of the most vulnerable residents in Vancouver's downtown south area. It featured an on-site mental health worker to help residents in twenty dedicated units with medications, life skills and counselling.  Funding for the program was provided through Coast Mental Health.  The remainder of the units were made available to low income urban singles with subsidies provided through BC Housing.

From the beginning, tenants have been involved in shaping the values of the community.  From tending the library to mopping the hallways, residents of the building continue to be involved and Candela continues to be a bright light in SRO housing in Vancouver.  It is a safe and welcoming community.
